Piknik Theatre has been offering free outdoor evening “picnic” performances of two different comedies each summer since 2008 currently reaching up to 1000 audience members, with a balance of locals and visitors attending. Concurrent with the summer seasonal performances, our guest artists offer an affordable Youth Theatre Workshop for 15-20 young artists ages 12-18. Beginning in 2018, Piknik Theatre expanded to offer an October season of a full length classical Shakespeare production to an audience of nearly 500.

Our 2019 season included Shakespeare’s The Tempest, a theatrical adaptation of The Paper Bag Princess, production support for the Steamboat Skating Club’s Mary Poppins on Ice, co-production of Peter Pan, and support for teen programming through the Steamboat Arts Academy. We continued our annual collaboration with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church for a spectacular fall season of Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Although all of our live, in-person events in 2020 were postponed due to the pandemic, we were able to offer a mini Youth Theatre program and an original audio theatre production of The Mail Order Husband (available through our website at no charge). In 2021, we’ll offer another outstanding outdoor summer season of two shows, the concurrent Youth Theatre Workshop, Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet at the Episcopal Church, and a second original audio theatre production.

The annual budget for Piknik Theatre is approximately $60,000. Because our outdoor performances and audio theatre are offered free of charge, and the youth programming nominally priced to encourage barrier-free participation, all of our funding comes from business sponsorships, government and foundation grants, and from individuals like you. Please consider being one of the special benefactors in our community that support professional theatre and theatre education.
