When the amphitheater goes quiet for the winter, our work moves indoors. Piknik teaching artists work alongside students across the Steamboat Springs School District, bringing professional theatre practice to young performers on their own stages.

Many familiar faces from Piknik’s Children’s Theatre programs will also take the stage in the production, creating a wonderful bridge between their experiences with Piknik and the theatre happening in their own school.
It’s exactly the kind of connection our Children’s Theatre Division was created to support: giving young artists more opportunities to learn, perform, and grow throughout the year.

Piknik Theatre is proud to partner with the local middle school on its production of Disney’s The Lion King Jr.Executive Director Celine Taylor joins Director Kendra Lovins and Music and Tech Director Jim Knapp in guiding students through the production process. Together, the team is working with young performers on music, staging, character development, technical theatre, and performance as they bring a full musical to the stage.

9 to 5: The Musical
Piknik Theatre is proud to support the high school’s fall production of 9 to 5: The Musical, directed by Piknik’s own, Abbey Iberg.
This production puts the incredible talent and creativity of our local students front and center as performers, musicians, designers, and technicians. Along the way, they’re bringing to life the music and spirit of Dolly Parton, a groundbreaking songwriter, performer, and businesswoman who helped open doors for generations of female artists.
Supporting school productions like this is an important part of Piknik’s work. By sharing professional resources and mentorship with our schools, we can help young artists take creative risks, build their skills, and discover just how much they are capable of.
